How I Used AI to Negotiate a $30K Raise
I was terrified to ask for more money. AI helped me prepare, practice, and walk into that room with confidence.
The Raise I Almost Didn't Ask For
I'd been at my company for 3 years. My responsibilities had grown. My salary had not.
I knew I was underpaid — I'd seen the industry data. But every time I thought about asking for a raise, I'd freeze. I didn't want to seem greedy. I didn't want to 'make it weird.'
Using AI as My Negotiation Coach
I started by asking AI to help me understand my market value. I gave it my role, years of experience, location, and accomplishments. It gave me a salary range that was $25–35K above what I was making.
Then I asked it to help me script the conversation. I practiced. Out loud. In my living room. With my cat as the audience.
The Conversation
I walked into my manager's office with a one-page document: my accomplishments, market data, and my ask. I'd rehearsed it so many times that when I sat down, I wasn't nervous. I was prepared.
My manager didn't say yes that day. But two weeks later, I got a $30K raise and a title bump.
What I Learned
-
Preparation beats courage. I didn't need to be brave. I needed to be ready.
-
Data is your friend. Emotions are hard to argue with. Salary data is impossible to argue with.
-
Practice out loud. Reading your script in your head is not the same as saying it. AI lets you rehearse the conversation — including the hard questions.
-
The worst case isn't that bad. They say no? You now have data and practice for your next conversation — or your next job.
The Lesson
Women ask for less money because we're taught to be grateful. AI doesn't have that conditioning. When I asked it to evaluate my worth, it didn't hedge. It told me the truth.
Sometimes you need a tool without bias to help you see your own value.
