My Wellness Journey: How I Stopped Glorifying Hustle Culture

By Sarah Chen6 min read

I built a business, burned out, and had to rebuild my relationship with work. Here's what wellness actually means to me now.

The Crash

Two years ago, I was the woman posting 'rise and grind' at 5am. I was running a growing business, sleeping 5 hours a night, and drinking four coffees before noon.

Then my body stopped. Literally. I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks.

The Rebuild

My doctor said it was burnout. My therapist said it was a lifetime of ignoring my own needs. Both were right.

I had to rebuild my relationship with work — and with rest. Here's what changed:

1. I Redefined Productivity

Productivity isn't hours worked. It's outcomes created. I now work 25 hours a week and get more done than I did working 60. I use AI to automate the busywork so I can focus on what matters.

2. I Set Boundaries Like They're Meetings

If it's not on my calendar, it doesn't happen. That includes rest, exercise, and time with people I love. I treat those blocks as non-negotiable.

3. I Stopped Earning My Rest

Rest isn't a reward for finishing your to-do list. Your to-do list will never be finished. Rest is a requirement for being a functioning human.

4. I Built a Community That Holds Me Accountable

The women in my group remind me when I'm sliding back into old patterns. They celebrate my rest days as much as my wins. That's the power of real sisterhood.

The Lesson

Hustle culture told me I needed to earn my worth through exhaustion. Wellness taught me my worth was never in question.

If you're reading this and you're tired — not just sleepy, but soul-tired — I see you. And I'm telling you: rest is not weakness. It's the strategy you've been missing.
